Background

Nicola Tuthill has made the biggest impression on the Irish hammer scene since Eileen O’Keeffe (Kilkenny City Harriers) finished 6th at the World Championships in Japan in 2007. Like O’Keeffe, Tuthill now has a silver World University Games medal to her credit and is fast closing in on the National record of 73.21m set by the Kilkenny woman over 18 years ago.

It was while competing with Bandon AC that the affable athlete learned her craft. She competed across multiple events and even ran cross-country for the club before settling on the hammer. Coached by Killian Barry she has a complete hammer set up on the family farm, bringing training right to her doorstep.

Tuthill stepped onto the Senior Major championship stage last year with her magnificent series of throws that qualified her for the European Championships Hammer final in Rome, where she finished 9th. A few months later she took part in her first ever Olympic Games. Her 2025 season has been even better. Back in March the UCD athlete won the u23 European Throwing Cup in Cyprus. In July she claimed the silver medal at the European u23 Championships and a month later another silver at the World University Games. Her personal best was set at the National Senior Championships in Santry where she retained her senior hammer title. Tokyo will be the Cork woman’s first World Championship appearance.
