James Gormley heads to the World Indoor Championships in Toruń with momentum, returning to global competition after a winter highlighted by a record-setting mile and a quota-backed selection over 1500m.
Gormley’s rise in the Irish system has come quickly since becoming eligible to represent Ireland in November 2024, after previously competing for Great Britain in international competition. He made his senior Irish debut at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2025, running 7:53.27 in his 3000m heat.
The 2026 indoor season has shown both range and sharpness. He ran 13:26.24 for 5000m at the end of January, then produced his key championship marker in Boston on February 22nd, finishing third in the mile with a time of 3:53.38 (Northern Ireland indoor record) and an official 1500m split of 3:37.60, fast enough to achieve Athletics Ireland’s ‘B’ standard requirement for the world indoors.
Selection for Toruń was ultimately confirmed via the quota/rankings route and Gormley makes his second appearance at the world indoors for Ireland after racing the 3000m in Nanjing last year.
