Kate O’Connor heads to the World Indoor Championships in Toruń as Ireland’s leading medal contender, arriving off the back of a remarkable run of form over the past 12 months.
The Dundalk St Gerard’s athlete has rapidly established herself as one of the top combined events competitors in the world, building a collection of major championship medals that has raised expectations ahead of this weekend’s pentathlon.
O’Connor’s breakthrough came during the 2025 season, where she secured bronze at the European Athletics Championships, announcing herself on the senior stage with a composed and consistent performance across all seven events.
That success carried through to the global stage. She claimed silver in the pentathlon at the World Indoor Championships before going on to win gold at the World University Games later in the year.
Her standout moment came outdoors, where she secured silver in the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships, delivering one of the most significant performances by an Irish athlete at that level in recent memory.
Across both indoor and outdoor formats, O’Connor has shown the kind of balance and reliability that defines elite multi event athletes, scoring strongly across disciplines and limiting costly errors.
Her 2026 indoor season has been selective but effective. At the Irish Indoor Championships just under three weeks ago, she won the long jump with a mark of 6.50 metres and finished second in the 60 metre hurdles in 8.21, behind Sarah Lavin.
The pentathlon presents a different kind of challenge, with five events compressed into a single day, placing a premium on consistency, recovery, and execution under pressure.
